As one of the inner districts of the Rukongai, Hokutan is relatively peaceful and law abiding. It is a mountainous district, filled with rising plateaus and mountains; one of which is "Mount Koifushi, a popular training destination for Shinigami.

This is the seventy-eighth district of the Soul Society which lies within West Rukon. It is known as the "Inuzuri District," "Howling Dog District," "Hanging Dog District," or "South Alley of Flowing Spirits."

Since this district is so far from the first district, it is invariably more dangerous than the first and third districts.

Similar to all the other districts, each residence is similar; that of a small, typical Japanese style Bō (房, loosely, "House."), with shōji (障子, lt. "Paper door,") dividing up the sections into different "Rooms," though, since it is so far from the first district, it is in considerably more disrepair than the first district.

This is the seventy-ninth district of the Soul Society which lies within West Rukon. It is known as the "Kusajishi District," "Grass Deer District," or "North Alley of Loitering Spirits."

Since it is so far from the first district, it is invariably more dangerous that the first district. It is one of the most dangerous districts in the West Rukon.
